The theme of the conference this year focussed on the deprivation of liberty, an area which is of particular interest to practitioners representing elderly and vulnerable clients due to the introduction of the first portion of the Mental Capacity (NI) Act 2016 which came into effect in December 2019. The law surrounding the deprivation of liberty can have a significant impact on the elderly, vulnerable and incapacitated and their support networks. The Conference was also attended by Karen Connolly and Ruth Flinn of our office, both whom work assist Linda in elder client matters within the firm. Linda Johnston was the Chair of this year’s Elder Law Conference organised by the Law Society of NI and convened on 6th February 2020.
