Farming Accidents in NI cause more than 5 deaths per year

24 July 2023

BBC News NI has recently reported that on average, more than five people are killed every year due to farming accidents in the past decade. The HSENI have stated that there have been two fatalities involving farming machinery in 2023, with older men being most at risk.

Farming is an essential industry that sustains communities and provides for our fundamental needs. However, the very nature of farming also exposes workers and visitors to inherent risks and potential hazards. Tragically, fatal accidents in farms are not uncommon, and the consequences can be devastating for families and communities alike. Workers in this industry are often required to operate heavy machinery and work with unpredictable livestock, which can result in severe injuries or fatalities.

Stephanie Berkeley, Manager of the Farm Safety Foundation states that, “farming continues to have the poorest safety record of any occupation in the UK and Ireland”. It is therefore extremely important that farmers take proactive measures to protect themselves and workers on the farm, creating an environment that minimises risks and promotes responsible practises. Regular safety inspections, hazard assessments, and maintaining a culture of safety on the farm can significantly reduce the likelihood of accidents.
